Ranch Water

Few drinks are as effortlessly refreshing — or as fashionable — as Ranch Water. A breezy Texan highball of tequila, fresh lime and sparkling mineral water, it is the antidote to anything fussy: light, crisp, and built for warm afternoons. With just three honest ingredients, it has become one of the most talked-about cocktails of recent years, and it could hardly be easier to make at home.
History of the Ranch Water
Ranch Water hails from West Texas, where its exact origins remain happily hazy. The most widely told story credits Kevin Williamson, an Austin restaurateur who recalled drinking a similar mix in his youth while out hunting with his father. In 1998 he put it on the menu at his Austin restaurant — essentially a Margarita served with a bottle of Topo Chico on the side, for guests to mix to their own taste.
The romantic version of the tale imagines West Texas ranchers cooling off after a day in the sun by combining their bottle of fizzy mineral water with tequila and a squeeze of lime. Whatever the truth, the drink became the unofficial cocktail of the region before exploding into national popularity, helped along by a wave of canned versions. Purists, though, insist that the real thing is best built fresh, and that Topo Chico's distinctive mineral fizz is essential to its character.
Recipe: How to Make a Classic Ranch Water

Tips for Perfection:

Curiosity: A Fun Fact About the Ranch Water
So central is Topo Chico to the drink that the rise of canned "ranch water" has sparked genuine controversy — even a lawsuit — with fans objecting loudly to versions that contain little or no actual tequila. For purists, it is fresh lime, real tequila and that famous green bottle, or nothing at all.
