Final Ward
Alessandro Scire CalabrisottoShare
The Final Ward is what happens when a great bartender takes a near-perfect classic and dares to reimagine it. A bold, whiskey-driven riff on the legendary Last Word, it trades gin for spicy rye and lime for lemon, producing something darker, warmer and altogether more brooding. Built on four equal parts, it is as easy to remember as it is to fall for.
History of the Final Ward
The Final Ward was created in 2007 by Phil Ward, one of the most influential bartenders of the modern American cocktail revival, during his tenure at New York's celebrated Death & Co. Ward took the Last Word — a Prohibition-era classic of equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino and lime — and rebuilt it around rye whiskey, swapping the lime for lemon to suit the new base spirit.
The result was a cocktail that kept the elegant equal-parts framework of the original while shifting it into a more autumnal, spirit-forward register. The name is a neat double play: a nod to the Last Word that inspired it, and a wink to Ward's own surname. It has since become a beloved fixture of cocktail menus around the world, and a textbook example of how thoughtfully a classic template can be reinvented. Ward would go on to open Mayahuel, another landmark New York bar, cementing his reputation as a master of riffs and agave alike.
Recipe: How to Make a Classic Final Ward
Ingredients:
- 22.5 ml (0.75 oz) rye whiskey
- 22.5 ml (0.75 oz) green Chartreuse
- 22.5 ml (0.75 oz) maraschino liqueur
- 22.5 ml (0.75 oz) fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
- Add the rye whiskey, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lemon juice to a cocktail shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice.
- Shake hard for around 12 to 15 seconds, until well chilled.
- Double-strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a brandied cherry or a lemon twist, if you wish.
Tips for Perfection:
- Use a robust, spicy rye — the whiskey needs backbone to stand up to the assertive Chartreuse and maraschino.
- Stick to genuine maraschino liqueur, such as Luxardo; its nutty, floral character is essential to the balance.
- Because the proportions are equal, accurate measuring matters enormously — this drink rewards precision.
Additional Recommendations
Variations:
- Last Ward — a popular tweak that dials back the Chartreuse and maraschino for a softer, more rye-forward sip.
- Bourbon version — swap rye for a high-proof bourbon for a rounder, sweeter take.
- Yellow Chartreuse — use yellow in place of green for a gentler, honeyed result.
Pairings:
- Aged hard cheeses, which echo the maraschino's nuttiness.
- Dark chocolate or chocolate-dipped cherries.
- Charcuterie, especially spiced or peppered cured meats.
Presentation:
- Serve straight up in an elegant coupe to honour its classic lineage.
- A single brandied cherry dropped into the glass makes a striking, ruby-toned garnish.
Curiosity: A Fun Fact About the Final Ward
The Final Ward belongs to a whole family of "equal-parts" riffs on the Last Word that bartenders have devised over the years — from the gin-and-Aperol Division Bell to countless others. Few, though, are as elegantly simple as Ward's: four ingredients, four equal measures, one unforgettable drink.
