Blood and Sand

Alessandro Scire Calabrisotto

Rich, fruity and faintly mysterious, the Blood and Sand is one of the few classic cocktails to put Scotch whisky at its heart. Equal parts Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice come together into something silky and beguiling — a drink as dramatic as the silent-film matador it was named after. It is proof that whisky can be sumptuous as well as serious.

History of the Blood and Sand

The Blood and Sand is one of cocktail history's great cinematic tie-ins. It takes its name from Blood and Sand, the 1922 silent film starring Rudolph Valentino as a doomed bullfighter, itself adapted from Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's 1909 Spanish novel Sangre y arena. The film was a box-office sensation, and the drink rode the wave of its fame.

The cocktail first appeared in print in The Savoy Cocktail Book of 1930, the celebrated volume associated with bartender Harry Craddock of London's Savoy hotel. Its original formula called for equal parts Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice — an unusual, almost daring combination that has intrigued drinkers ever since. Few cocktails wear their early-cinema glamour quite so openly.

Recipe: How to Make a Classic Blood and Sand

Ingredients:

  • 22 ml (0.75 oz) blended Scotch whisky
  • 22 ml (0.75 oz) sweet vermouth
  • 22 ml (0.75 oz) cherry liqueur (such as Cherry Heering)
  • 22 ml (0.75 oz) fresh orange juice

Instructions:

  1. Add all four ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake hard for around 15 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with a cherry or an orange twist.
  5. Serve immediately.

Tips for Perfection:

  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice — ideally blood orange when in season — for the brightest flavour.
  • Choose a smooth blended Scotch so it harmonises rather than dominates.
  • Taste as you go: the balance of sweet and citrus can be nudged to your liking.

Additional Recommendations

Variations:

  • Blood orange version: use blood orange juice for deeper colour and flavour.
  • Smoky Blood and Sand: swap in a peated Scotch for a bolder edge.
  • Bottled-in-bond twist: use a richer whisky for extra backbone.

Pairings:

  • Dark chocolate and cherry desserts.
  • Cured meats and charcuterie.
  • Strong, aged cheeses.

Presentation:

  • Serve in a chilled coupe to highlight its deep ruby hue.
  • Garnish with a single cocktail cherry or a flamed orange twist.

Curiosity: A Fun Fact About the Blood and Sand

The Blood and Sand is one of the very few enduring classic cocktails built around Scotch whisky — and one of even fewer named after a movie. Its blend of whisky and orange juice still raises eyebrows today, yet that unlikely pairing is exactly what has kept it on bar menus for a century.
