Trailblazing at the American Bar

During her tenure from 1903 to 1925, Coleman became one of the few women to hold such a prestigious position in a male-dominated industry. Her warm personality and innovative cocktails attracted a distinguished clientele, including Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, and the Prince of Wales. She was renowned for her ability to craft drinks tailored to her patrons' preferences, solidifying her reputation as a masterful mixologist.

The Creation of the Hanky Panky

Among her many contributions, the Hanky Panky cocktail remains her most celebrated creation. Crafted for Sir Charles Hawtrey, a regular patron seeking a revitalizing drink, Coleman combined gin, sweet vermouth, and a dash of Fernet-Branca. Upon tasting it, Hawtrey exclaimed, "By Jove! That is the real hanky-panky," giving the cocktail its memorable name.
